Kirkland Hosts Free Green Building Seminar
Local Experts Share Private and Public Programs

Kirkland, WA - A free seminar on Green Building programs offered by Built GreenTM of King and Snohomish Counties, What's Working, Inc. and the City of Kirkland will be held Wednesday, January 23, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Kirkland City Hall, 123 5th Avenue. The seminar is sponsored by the ECityGov Alliance's MyBuildingPermit.com training committee. The seminar is free and advanced registration is encouraged by contacting Suzanne McCauley, Kirkland Fire & Building Department, at 425-587-3622 or smccauley@ci.kirkland.wa.us or online.

Aaron Adelstein, Executive Director, Built GreenTM will speak about general Green Building concepts and techniques, the agency's certification program and new developments with Built GreenTM and the industry. David Johnston, founder of What's Working, Inc., Boulder, CO, will share the social and ecological benefits of green building. Tom Jensen, Plans Review Supervisor, Kirkland Building Services Division, will present the City�s new pilot Green Building Program which offers priority permit review for single family residential construction that meets certain rating standards.

New Fees on Jan. 1, 2008 - (1/1/2008)

New fees will be effective on January 1, 2008 for Bellevue, Duvall and Gig Harbor.
Therefore, all permits left in basket by midnight December 31, 2007 will be deleted in order to avoid mixing old fees and new fees.

MyBuildingPermit.com Wins Innovations Award - (7/12/2005)
The Innovations Group recently presented the Outstanding Achievement in Local Government award to the eCityGov Alliance for MyBuildingPermit.com. The award was presented at the Transforming Local Government Conference in Sarasota Florida on June 17, 2005. The IG award was presented for "Outstanding Achievement in Local Government Innovation for MyBuildingPermit.com which is a web-based service that allows property owners and contractors to apply for, pay for, and receive multiple permits for ten jurisdictions in a single on-line transaction."

Code Changes going into effect in the near future. - (6/30/2005)

There are a number of Code Changes going into effect in the near future that may impact the design and construction of your projects that you should be aware of:

June 30, 2005
2005 National Electrical Code goes into effect along with Washington State Amendments. You can purchase the 2005 NEC at a variety of sources including the Washington Association of Building Official’s Book Store (www.wabo.org)

July 1st 2005 there will be State changes to the following codes:
2003 International Building Code
2003 International Fire Code
2003 International Mechanical Code
Washington State Energy Code
Adoption of the ANSI 117-2003
Adoption of the 2005 National Electrical Code

If you are interested in reviewing the changes, they are available on the State Building Code Council’s web site (http://www.sbcc.wa.gov/ - click on “State Building Codes” & scroll down ~ 1/3 of the page). You can also purchase the documents from the Washington Association of Building Officials web site (www.wabo.org) and select the “Book Store”

August 1st 2005
Engrossed House Bill 1848 (EHB 1848) becomes effective. This bill impacts multi-family design and construction either newly constructed or rehabilitated when the permit is issued on or after August 1, 2005

With the exception of EHB 1848 requirements, projects are vested under the codes in effect at the date of application. So its important for you to keep in mind the effective dates of the State Changes as you design and work on projects.

Snohomish County Joins MyBuildingPermit.com - (4/8/2005)
Snohomish County, Washington, is the newest member of MyBuildingPermit.com and now offers on-line residential mechanical, residential plumbing, and re-roof permits through the site. The County joins nine cities in offering on-line building permits, tip sheets and other valuable information through MyBuildingPermit.com. The addition of the County more than doubles the number of citizens and businesses served by MyBuildingPermit.com.

MyBuildingPermit.com Adds New Service - (3/22/2005)
The eCityGov Alliance is proud to announce the launch of the latest enhancement to MyBuildingPermit.com. The site now offers on-line permit status and history for six cities. With this latest enhancement anyone can now: Check the status of any permit Review the permit history (including fees, activities and conditions) Research property information A contractors, architects, project managers and property owners now have direct access to permitting information stored in participating cities databases. Accessing permit status and history on-line eliminates the need for phone calls or standing in line at the counter just to find a piece if information that is now available from the comfort of your office or home. Go to www.MyBuildingPermit.com and click on the Permit Research Tab. Follow the simple directions find to available permit status and history data on a particular permit or parcel.

Snohomish County Inks Subscription Agreement - (2/7/2005)
Snohomish County has signed a subscription agreement with the eCityGov Alliance for MyBuildingPermit.com. The County’s implementation team has been working closely with the Alliance building officials and the MBP.com management teams for the past couple of months to prepare for the launch. This is the first major expansion of MBP.com since the launch of the original nine cities. The Alliance is extremely pleased to welcome Snohomish County to MBP.com. An analysis of the County customer base reveled that 50% of the County’s customers for over the counter permits are already using MBP.com The Alliance and County are planning for a launch date in the later part of March, 2005.

Post-Tensioned Concrete Construction Seminar - (1/23/2005)
Post-Tensioned Concrete Construction Seminar (January 20th, 2005) This is a FREE two course seminar on post-tensioned (PT) concrete construction. The first half will focus on procedures for pre-construction meetings and what Building Inspectors should be aware of. The second half will focus on plan reviews and what Plans Examiners should be requiring on the plans. The inspection and PT pre-construction meeting session will be presented by Michal Rosencrans and Bob Gardner. The PT design/plan review session will be presented by Paul Crockeris.

National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Seminar This is the second seminar (January 12th 2005) Regulations for communities to participate in the NFIP. A community must adopt and enforce a flood plain management ordinance that regulates development in the community's floodplain in order to participate.

Seismic Hazards and Implications Seminar
This course will include a comprehensive coverage of the Pacific Northwest Region’s seismic hazards associated with earthquakes generated along the shallow and deep Cascadia subduction zone, and from nearby faults in the shallow North American continental crust. It will also reiterate the potential seismic risk to any structure or facility in the Pacific Northwest and how it is dependent on the importance of the facility, its proximity with respect to the potential sources of earthquakes and the potential seismic hazards, its site topographic, geologic and hydrologic conditions, and the frequency of recurrence of a particular seismic hazard.

 International Building Safety Week is April 4 - 10, 2004. It is a time to increase public awareness of the life-safety services provided by local and state building departments. It is also an occasion to let the public know about the ongoing work that needs to be done in order to maintain the high standard of building safety we now enjoy. This high level of confidence is made possible by the efforts of dedicated professionals in building departments around the country to ensure that safety is the first priority. This year’s focus is on the prevention team dedicated to ensuring the public’s safety at home, at school, and at work and is aimed at raising this level of awareness and appreciation among the public. New International Code Update - (3/12/2004)
The new International Codes as amended by the State will become effective July 1, 2004. A goal of the combined cities is to create a common approach to adoption of the codes, resulting in consistent technical and administrative provisions, appendixes, and supplemental codes.

Description: This course covers the basic principles of structure evaluation after an earthquake following the Applied Technology Council (ATC) method. King County and cities have inspectors to perform building evaluations following an earthquake, however, given the potential for delay and the need for site-specific information, it is helpful for people on-site to understand the criteria used to determine if a building is safe for occupancy.

There is NO class fee for this training. Normally our office, King County Office of Emergency Management, charges $40.00/person to attend this class, but for this one time offering we will be covering all expenses. The class includes an ATC-20 Field Manual.

Clandestine Drug Labs: What you need to know - (8/7/2002)

First Annual WABO Education Institute - (6/17/2002)
Leavenworth,Washington on June 17-21,2002. The Washington Association of Building Officials has established the WABO Annual Education Institute(WABO AEI). This institute is the first week-long multi-track program of quality education and training offered in Washington state. The curriculum offers architects, engineers, plumbers, fire protection personnel, electricians, insurance adjusters and code enforcement personnel.

Public Meeting - Earthquake Home Retrofit Grants - (5/15/2002)
Public Meeting Scheduled to Discuss Earthquake Home Retrofit Grants for Low-to-Moderate Income Homeowners.
May 15, 2002 from 7:00pm to 8:00pm Central Area Senior Center (500 – 30th Ave. South).
City of Seattle Emergency Management staff will describe the Earthquake Home Retrofit project and alternatives currently under consideration. The new federal requirement for all-hazard mitigation planning will be mentioned.

After the presentation, there will be a discussion about the alternative solutions for the project. Time will be allotted for questions and comments.

Free Seminar - Residential Energy Code Training - (2/27/2002)
The Cities of Bellevue, Kirkland, Issaquah, Redmond, and Mercer Island invite you to attend a one-day seminar on the Washington State Residential Energy Code.
Bruce Carter with Washington State University Energy Program will present topics dealing with the residential energy code.
